Skin Cancer Screening in Bangor, Maine

Regular skin cancer screenings are one of the most effective ways to catch skin cancer early, when it's most treatable. At Northern Maine Skin Cancer Center, our team — led by double board-certified Mohs surgeon and dermatologist Dr. Faith Whalen — offers full-body skin exams for patients without a current diagnosis, as well as evaluation of specific spots or lesions of concern.

What's Included in a Screening

A skin cancer screening is a visual, head-to-toe examination of your skin to check for signs of skin cancer or precancerous changes — including areas that are easy to miss on your own, like your scalp, back, and between your toes.

Why Get screened

A specialist, not a generalist — screenings are performed by a board-certified Mohs surgeon and dermatologist, not a general practitioner

Continuity of care — if something suspicious is found, treatment (including Mohs surgery) happens with the same team, without a referral to a separate specialist

Built for early detection — annual screenings, starting as early as age 18, are the primary way skin cancer is caught while it's most treatable

What a Screening Involves

Your screening is performed by Dr. Whalen or a member of our clinical team — a head-to-toe visual exam checking for signs of skin cancer or precancerous changes, including areas that are easy to miss on your own. Most screenings take about 10 minutes.

No Referral Needed to Get Screened

Most patients can schedule a screening directly, without a referral. If your insurance plan requires one, your primary care provider can send it to our office ahead of your visit.
