Skin Cancer Dermatologist in Bangor, Maine
Northern Maine Skin Cancer Center is Bangor's dedicated skin cancer dermatology practice — led by Dr. Faith Whalen, MD, FACMS, FAAD, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon with over 15,000 procedures performed.
Unlike a general dermatology practice, NMSCC focuses exclusively on skin cancer diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and surveillance. If you have a suspicious spot, a history of skin cancer, or simply want a full-body skin cancer screening, we're here to help.
Most patients can schedule directly without a referral — though some insurance plans, including most HMOs, may require one. We recommend checking with your insurance provider if you're unsure.
What We Treat
Northern Maine Skin Cancer Center is a specialized practice — we focus exclusively on skin cancer and the conditions that lead to it. Although we do not treat acne, rashes, or psoriasis, we're here to evaluate suspicious spots, changing moles or lesions, and provide expert care for patients with a history of skin cancer.
We commonly evaluate and treat:
Basal cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Melanoma
Actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions)
Seborrheic keratoses and other benign lesions requiring evaluation
Suspicious moles or spots of concern
Not sure if your concern falls within our scope? Give us a call at 207.802.0853 and we'll help point you in the right direction.
Skin Cancer Screenings
No Diagnosis Needed
You don't need an existing diagnosis to schedule a skin cancer screening. If you have a family history of skin cancer, a history of sun exposure, or simply want peace of mind, a full-body skin check is a great place to start.
Plastic Surgeon Collaboration
For patients who prefer reconstruction performed under sedation or general anesthesia, we work closely with plastic surgeons to coordinate your care seamlessly.
Board-Certified Expertise
Dr. Whalen is double board-certified in both Dermatology and Mohs Surgery — one of the only providers of her specialty in northern Maine.
No Referral Needed for Most Patients
Most patients can self-refer directly. If your insurance plan requires a referral, your primary care provider can send one to our office.
Surgical and Non-Surgical Options
We offer both surgical treatments including Mohs surgery and excision, and non-surgical options such as GentleCure (IG-SRT) — so your treatment plan can be tailored to what works best for you.
Serving Northern Maine
As the northernmost Mohs surgeon in Maine, Dr. Whalen cares for patients from Bangor, Orono, Brewer, Old Town, and across northern Maine.
What to Expect
1) Your First Appointment — At your initial visit, one of our providers will review your health history, examine any areas of concern, and discuss your options. If a biopsy is needed, it can often be performed the same day.
2) Treatment Planning — If skin cancer is diagnosed, we'll walk you through all available treatment options — surgical and non-surgical — and develop a plan that fits your diagnosis, lifestyle, and preferences.
3) Ongoing Surveillance — Patients with a history of skin cancer benefit from regular follow-up screenings. We'll work with you to establish a monitoring schedule that makes sense for your history and risk level.
